Moisture Meters:

Moisture meters have been around the surveying scene for some time now and still create some animated discussion among surveyors on their usefulness.

It does take some time and practice to understand what the meter is expressing. For example a GRP laminate that has a core section will often have higher readings than a solid laminate, introduce some carbon fibre to the mix and the readings can become really confusing.

As one surveyor stated; "Moisture meters are a snare and a delusion". I agree, but like any piece of machinery or tool, it takes time to learn how to use a meter to maximum benefit.

Too often moisture meters are used to determine the condition of the laminate in GRP construction without other methods of testing. There is no direct correlation between laminate condition and moisture content. Simply putting a meter on a laminate and declaring the laminate condition from the readings is incorrect. The readings may indicate moisture ingress, but the only method to determine the laminate condition is by invasive means. Meters can be very accurate in tracing core moisture ingress and are a useful tool when surveying cored hulls.

Moisture meters are very good at finding rot or soft areas in timber. It is possible to mark out areas for invasive testing quite accurately by using a moisture meter.

Different meters will give different results and comparing readings between different brands will usually end in confusion.

I have seen advice given that supports purchasing a meter to do your own readings. Doing your own readings will only be useful to monitor ingress over a period of time, unless you have access to a data base of typical laminate moisture profiles.
